Dextran is present in the mucus secreted during the growth of certain microorganisms. It is primarily composed of D-glucopyranose linked by α,1→ bonds, with branching points at 1→2, 1→3, and 1→4 linkages. Its structure varies depending on the microbial species and growth conditions.
